For the first 2 weeks of April this year, we are delighted to exhibit the work of Edinburgh based Artist Victoria Gazeley. Originally from Dundee, Victoria graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone in 2011, and has been working as a freelance artist ever since. Her work is inspired by her travels. Having dreamed of travelling the world as a young child, this remains a keen interest to this day.

 ‘The Journey is better than the Destination’ focusses on Victoria’s travels across Europe. After backpacking across Western Europe in 2012, then Eastern Europe in 2016, Victoria threw herself into sketches, photographs and research from aspects of her trips that she found fascinating.

 The title of the exhibition primarily references to Victoria's use of the John Lennon Wall in her watercolours of Prague. It also, however, contains double entendre, upon coming back to the UK after her travels, the UK decided to leave the EU. Political concerns of the past and present are of great significance to the artist's background research in this exhibition, and Victoria subtly translates this through her work.

With the juxtaposition of wistful watercolours and use of unconventional graffiti themes, Victoria challenges the viewer in this exhibition. Through the versatile use of paint media she deliberates which emotions she felt in certain locations, taking the viewer on the journey with her.
